The Great Tennessee Monkey Trial – starring Ed Asner
The Great Tennessee Monkey Trial, starring Ed Asner (Mary Tyler Moore Show) came to The Paramount Theater on Saturday evening.
L.A. Theatre Works, America‘s premier radio theater company, returns to performing arts centers and theaters across the country with its acclaimed production of The Great Tennessee Monkey Trial. The reignited debate over what American schools can teach about the beginnings of life continues to be illuminated through the words of Clarence Darrow and William Jennings Bryan in the original docudrama by playwright Peter Goodchild.
Â
Drawn from the 1925 transcripts of Tennessee vs. John Thomas Scopes, The Great Tennessee Monkey Trial recreates a controversial court case that put high school science teacher John Thomas Scopes on trial for violating the Butler Act which banned the teaching of evolution in Tennessee’s public schools. Recreating the production format used by L.A. Theatre Works for its innovative live in-performance recording series at the Skirball Cultural Center in Los Angeles, the touring production is performed as a radio play before live audiences by many of America’s leading actors, including Edward Asner (reprising the role he originated in 1992 of William Jennings Bryan) Shannon Cochran, Matthew Patrick Davis, Matt Gaydos, James Gleason, Arye Gross, Jerry Hardin, John Heard, Rob Nagle, Geoffrey Wade and Michael Winters. The original trial was also broadcast – the first court case to be on the radio in America.

Ella spent the better part of a month with me in Charlottesville over the holidays and I managed to capture a few frames while she relaxed.
The Fender Stratocastor
My favorite electirc guitar is an instrument I bought in New York City. It’s a black over sunburst relic 1960 Fender Stratocastor that has a neck best described by Eric Clapton:  “…..and suddenly it’s like jumping into a warm pool of water.”
