Lightning Storm
Many of you know I was on vacation with my family this past week at Litchfield Beach in South Carolina. We stayed at our beach house in Charlestowne Grant and while working at 1:30am, I noticed there was a nice lightning storm approaching. I grabbed my camera and a tripod and decided to catch a few storm photographs. Little did I know I was in for one of the biggest adrenaline rushes of my life. Photo #1 is below. Photo #5 struck within a few hundred yards of where I was standing and caused me to sprint back to our house for cover. My hands were shaking for 15 minutes after I returned. Needless to say, I didn’t immediately head to bed……I think it was 4am before I fell asleep! We are printing a limited run of these photographs. Feel free to call our offices or email us (info@robgarland.com) if you would like to have a copy.

Julie + Steve – the engagement
julie and steve were great sports to sweat through some fun shots this past weekend at the annual albemarle county fair this is an idea i have had for a while now and was so excited they were up for it. its been a while since i have been to the fair, guess my childhood memories were a little crushed when i realized that the local fair is no coney island… no big swing, the ferris was a bit smaller than i expected, to say the least, but all the same we got some super fun shots and of course took a little break to eat some funnel cake. i cant wait till the wedding!

John Mayer
Last week, I had the recent pleasure of photographing two John Mayer shows in Washington DC and Virginia Beach. Many of you know that I am a huge blues guitar fan and enjoy the music created by such legends as Stevie Ray Vaughan, Eric Clapton, Robert Cray, B.B. King, etc. I know…….you ask how John Mayer fits in??? To be totally honest…..if you haven’t seen John Mayer recently….GO!!! His guitar work is exceptional! I had the opportunity to see him perform four times over the past year and I have been blown away by his guitar solos. I am attaching a few photographs from the past two concerts.
The Artistic Guild of The Wedding Photojournalist Association – International Awards
“The Artistic Guild of the Wedding Photojournalist Association [AG]WPJA is a group of international wedding photojournalists, who capture unscripted wedding moments as they happen, and excel in the art of post-production image processing. The [AG]WPJA is a division within the Wedding Photojournalist Association (WPJA); one which specifically promotes Fine Art Wedding Photojournalism.”
Meg and I are pleased to announce our recent placements in this prestigious competition.
AGWPJA Award winners:
14th place in the “Getting Ready” category – Meg Runion
Judge’s Comments: 1. How fun! I love that the curlers are all red and your used them to create an off-the-wall tension filled composition. It’ll look great in their wedding album, definitely a keeper.
7th place in the “Ceremony” category – Rob Garland
Judge’s Comments: 1. Sometimes bending your knees and peeking through crevices lead to fun little side moments. Good seeing by the photographer and keeping on their toes to capture this moment.
15 place in the “Portraits” category – Rob Garland
Judge’s Comments: 1. Hmm, cocktails … oh, back to judging:) Specifically, I like the complimenting color tones and how the image has been drastically thrown out of focus on the upper left and lower right corners. The straw draws you down and through the image. Spectacular toning!
17th place in the “Getting Ready” category – Rob Garland
Judge’s Comments: 1. I’m not sure if this a a composite or a blown-out image but I really like the composition and slight movement. The mono-chromatic tones also works to tie the two pieces of the image together.
Wedding Photojournalist Association International Awards
I am pleased to announce recent placements in the spring 2007 WPJA international competition. There were over 3,000 entries from over 30 countries…..needless to say, we are thrilled.
WPJA Award Winners:
12th Place in the “Creative Portraits” category - Rob Garland
Judges Comments: “This was a simple portrait, but that is part of its appeal. I liked the backlight and the color palette. Reward to the photographer scouting out a simple, but beautiful portrait location.”
17th Place in the “Reception Ambiance” category – Rob Garland
JUDGES COMMENTS: This looks like a cozy, inviting wedding reception. I like the warm glow of the lights inside the tent full of people and surrounded by peaceful greenery.
